The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) will actively engage in the 109th session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 109) from December 2 to 6, 2024. As the principal technical advisor to the IMO, IACS is supporting the IMO’s mission to enhance maritime safety and sustainability. Key IACS contributions for MSC 109 include co-sponsoring and submitting various documents aimed at clarifying standards, enhancing data quality, supporting alternative fuels, and strengthening cybersecurity.

IACS Submissions to MSC 109

  1. IGF Code Amendments (MSC 109/3/3): IACS proposes modifications to the IGF Code to clarify guidelines on fuel safety, promoting uniform implementation across the industry.
  2. Standard Wave Data and GBS Audit Comments (MSC 109/4/2, MSC 109/4/4, MSC 109/4/6): IACS responds to the GBS audit report on the IACS Recommendation 34 revision. These comments emphasize adherence to good seamanship principles and consistent structural requirements for recognized organizations.
  3. Data Quality for MASS (MSC 109/5/4): IACS suggests a high-level approach to data management to ensure safety for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), highlighting the importance of reliable data quality.
  4. Alternative Fuels Information (MSC 109/6/1): In support of sustainable shipping, IACS provides data on alternative fuels, proposing a standard format to represent their physical properties, aiding in the safe and effective adoption of greener fuel options.
  5. Maritime Cybersecurity (MSC 109/7/1): IACS calls for enhanced cybersecurity measures following new guidelines, focusing on strengthening protections for ships and port facilities against cyber threats.
  6. FSA Guidelines Revision (MSC 109/11/1, MSC 109/11/2): IACS proposes revisions to the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) Guidelines, aimed at improving clarity and practicality.
  7. Pilot Transfer Arrangements (MSC 109/13/8): IACS offers clarifications and footnote modifications on pilot transfer standards, supporting safer pilot boarding operations.
  8. IGC Code Amendments (MSC 109/14/1): IACS comments on draft amendments to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), seeking finalization at MSC 110.
  9. Unified Interpretations and GMDSS Requirements (MSC 109/21/1, MSC 109/21/2): IACS provides insight on developing guidelines for consistent interpretation of safety regulations and clarifies the status of MF/HF radio equipment for global communication standards.
