IACS Updates Position Papers On Key Maritime Issues

6

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), a leading body in maritime safety and regulation, has released updated “Position Papers” covering a wide range of topics crucial to the global shipping industry.

These papers provide essential background information, outline IACS’s stance, and summarize ongoing actions. By working alongside the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other industry stakeholders, IACS continues to focus on safety, environmental protection, and the adoption of new technologies.

Strengthening Maritime Safety and Security

One of the central themes of the updated papers is the commitment to maritime safety. IACS addressed ballast water management by supporting globally consistent implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention while addressing technical and safety challenges.

In response to industry concerns, particularly those highlighted by the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), IACS has prioritized container ship safety. Issues such as cargo fires, loss of containers at sea, and structural risks from whipping are being investigated for potential regulatory improvements. Additionally, IACS has increased its focus on cyber resilience, recognizing the threat of cyber incidents to ships, crews, and the marine environment.

Embracing Innovation and Sustainability

Beyond safety, IACS is also steering the industry towards innovation and sustainability. It has committed to supporting digitalization, providing guidance for regulatory compliance while ensuring safety during digital transformation. On greenhouse gas emissions, IACS emphasizes the IMO’s global regulatory framework as the appropriate approach to decarbonization, supporting both technical and operational measures.

IACS is also exploring the role of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and new fuels and technologies, ensuring safety standards align with global practices such as the IGF Code. Furthermore, issues like underwater noise pollution and nuclear propulsion are being carefully addressed, with IACS contributing to harmonized measurement procedures and responsible nuclear integration.

The updated position papers demonstrate IACS’s proactive role in shaping the future of the maritime sector. From tackling pressing challenges like container ship safety and cyber resilience to supporting long-term goals such as decarbonization and autonomous shipping, IACS is working to harmonize safety, technology, and sustainability. Through collaboration with the IMO and industry stakeholders, these initiatives aim to create a safer, greener, and more resilient global shipping industry.
