Following the conclusion of the International Chamber of Shipping’s (ICS) Annual General Meeting and Board Meeting, several key leadership transitions and strategic developments have been announced, reflecting a pivotal moment for the global shipping industry.

The ICS Board unanimously recommended a new Chair, set to assume office in June 2026, succeeding the current leader. Additionally, three new Vice Chairs have been appointed, expanding the global representation of ICS leadership. The organisation also welcomed its new Secretary General, following a carefully planned handover period to ensure continuity.

Strengthened Leadership Team

The ICS Board confirmed the appointments of new Vice Chairs representing Germany, Japan, and Sweden. These appointments are designed to strengthen international collaboration and provide experienced guidance as the industry navigates a rapidly changing landscape. Leadership transitions also included a new Secretary General, with dignitaries acknowledging the outgoing Secretary’s contributions during a challenging period for the sector.

Expanded Global Representation

The Malta International Shipowners Association has been elevated from Associate to Full Member status, reflecting Malta’s increasing role in global maritime affairs. This milestone underscores ICS’s ongoing commitment to inclusive representation and the strengthening of maritime governance worldwide.

Strategic Focus on Climate, Trade, and Seafarer Welfare

Board discussions addressed several urgent issues facing global shipping:

  • Upcoming GHG reduction measures, set for adoption at the IMO’s October session.

  • The impacts of growing protectionism and trade tariffs, including concerns about economic bifurcation and disrupted supply chains.

  • Seafarer welfare and operational resilience in the face of geopolitical and environmental stressors.

ICS reaffirmed its central role in advocating industry positions during complex IMO negotiations and shaping future-ready policy frameworks.

Tribute to Service and Vision for the Future

Leaders at the meeting acknowledged past contributions and looked ahead to a future shaped by collaborative leadership. The outgoing Secretary General was praised for guiding the sector through a turbulent era marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, major shipping disruptions, and the accelerating decarbonisation agenda.

ICS reaffirmed its mission to support a resilient, transparent, and sustainable maritime industry, pledging continued action through strong global partnerships and inclusive governance.
