  • A universal GHG contribution by ships remains a key topic.
  • Complex negotiations with countries like China and Brazil are expected.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) expressed satisfaction with the progress made at the 17th IMO meeting. They stressed that there will be need for further action to finalize a workable decarbonization strategy for the maritime industry.

Commitment to Transparent Solutions

ICS reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the IMO Member States in the coming months. This is to develop a transparent and fair solution to meet the IMO’s decarbonization goals.

A central topic of discussion is the proposal for a universal GHG contribution by ships based on CO2e emissions. It has received strong support from a majority of IMO Member States.

ICS emphasized the importance of closing the cost gap between conventional marine fuels and low/zero GHG fuels. This is to accelerate the industry’s transition towards net zero emissions by 2050.

Concerns from China and Brazil

ICS acknowledged the concerns raised by countries such as China and Brazil regarding the universal GHG contribution model. It recognizes that there is a need for further discussions.

The ICS will continue negotiations with governments from all sides to reach a consensus on GHG reduction regulations. IMO will approve them next year.
