IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO LINES) and Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER) have successfully installed a Norsepower Rotor Sail™ on the bulk carrier Yodohime (completed in February 2016). The installation, carried out in December 2024 at a dockyard, marks a significant step toward sustainable maritime operations. The vessel has now completed its first voyage with the new system.
Key Features of the Norsepower Rotor Sail™
Size & Placement: The 24m x 4m Rotor Sail has been installed on the forecastle deck of Yodohime.
AI-Driven Optimization: It employs advanced AI technology to adjust rotation, direction, and speed based on real-time meteorological data.
Wind-Assisted Propulsion: The system utilizes the Magnus effect, where wind interacting with the rotating sail generates additional thrust, enhancing fuel efficiency.
Environmental Benefits: Expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO2‚ emissions by 6-10%, supporting the industry’s decarbonization goals.
The successful integration of Norsepower’s wind propulsion system on Yodohime demonstrates IINO LINES’ and J-POWER’s commitment to sustainable shipping solutions. By leveraging wind energy, the initiative aims to optimise fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact, paving the way for greener maritime operations.
