- IMI will supply a PEM electrolyser for Lithuania’s Port of Klaipėda.
- The project aligns with the EU Green Deal’s 90% emissions reduction target for transport by 2050.
- IMI’s customizable electrolyzer technology and collaboration with MT Group underscore their commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Lithuania’s Port of Klaipėda is set to become the first in the Baltic region to produce green hydrogen on-site, thanks to a partnership between EPC contractor MT Group and IMI. This project marks a significant step towards meeting the EU Green Deal’s emissions reduction targets while showcasing the potential of innovative hydrogen technology in decarbonizing the marine sector, reports IMI.
Pioneering Green Hydrogen in the Baltic Region
IMI’s PEM electrolyzer will enable the Port of Klaipėda to produce 500kg of green hydrogen daily, equivalent to 127 tons per year.
The system operates on a 3 MW electrical input sourced from sustainable energy. It helps to reduce emissions by minimizing the need for hydrogen transport and storage.
Strategic Collaboration with MT Group
MT Group, a leader in critical energy infrastructure across Europe, was chosen to develop this landmark project.
Their expertise in renewable energy and hydrogen solutions, coupled with their role in major projects like Green Energy Park Global, positions them as a key player in advancing sustainable engineering.
Electrolyser Technology Tailored to Project Needs
IMI’s VIVO Electrolyser offers customization options ranging from 100kW to 5MW, expandable to 20MW via modular configuration.
This adaptability was a critical factor in the selection process. This allows the solution to meet specific project requirements set by MT Group and the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
Advancing EU Green Deal Goals
The project supports the European Green Deal’s mandate for ports to achieve a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050.
Hydrogen produced on-site will fuel vessels and shore-side equipment, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels and driving progress toward cleaner maritime operations.
Commitment to Innovation and Collaboration
IMI has actively collaborated with MT Group and the Klaipėda Seaport Authority throughout the project.
This includes hosting technicians from both organizations at their manufacturing sites in Sardinia to witness the electrolyzer production process. It would strengthen partnerships and shared goals in advancing green hydrogen adoption.
