IMO And WMU Organize Workshop On URN Reduction

Underwater radiated noise (URN) from shipping is a growing environmental concern. It can disrupt marine life’s communication, navigation, and reproduction, leading to potential population declines. Coastal communities that rely on healthy marine ecosystems for fisheries, tourism, and other economic activities are also at risk, according to IMO.

A Brief Background

Over the last century, human activities such as shipping, sonars, construction activities in the ocean, energy exploration, etc., have increased and are affecting our oceans, from nearshore areas to the high seas. These activities generate noise that can travel long distances underwater, negatively impacting ocean animals and ecosystems.

Underwater radiated noise (URN) from shipping is a significant environmental concern, affecting marine life and the coastal communities that depend on these ecosystems.

Taking into account these concerns, a landmark effort and achievement globally was realized by IMO with the endorsement of the Revised Guidelines for the reduction of URN from commercial shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life and the launch of the GloNoise Partnership in collaboration with GEF and UNDP.

Workshop Organized

IMO and the World Maritime University (WMU) are organizing a workshop to bring together various stakeholders and representatives from the countries involved in the GloNoise Partnership. The goal is to share knowledge, best practices, and progress on reducing Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) through policies and strategies.
