The IMO has released its January 2025 Monthly Piracy Report, reports Safety4Sea.
Multiple Incidents
In January 2025, the following piracy and armed robbery incidents were reported:
Incident 1:
- A Saudi Arabian oil tanker was underway in the Singapore Strait.
- The engine room crew found footprints and discovered missing auxiliary engine spare parts during routine checks.
- The crew searched the vessel, and the Singapore Police Coast Guard was notified.
- Location: Singapore Straits.
Incident 2:
- A Liberian bulk carrier was underway.
- Four armed individuals with a gun were seen in the engine room.
- The master raised the alarm, and a search was conducted.
- No perpetrators were found, and nothing was stolen.
- The incident was reported to Singapore VTIS West, and the Republic of Singapore Navy and Singapore Police Coast Guard were notified.
- Upon arrival in Singapore, the Singapore Police Coast Guard searched the vessel.
- Information was shared with Indonesian authorities.
- Location: Approximately 6 nautical miles west of Pulau Cula, Indonesia, in the Malacca Strait.
Incident 3:
Six knife-wielding individuals were seen in the engine room while the ship was underway.
- The crew mustered, and a search was conducted, but no perpetrators were found.
- Engine spares were stolen.
- The incident was reported to Singapore VTIS, and the Singapore Police Coast Guard was notified.
- Location: Malacca Strait, near Pulau Cula, Indonesia.
Incident 4:
- Two individuals with gun-like objects were seen in the engine room while underway.
- The crew searched the vessel, but no perpetrators were found.
- Nothing was stolen, and no injuries were reported.
- The incident was reported to Singapore VTIS West, and safety broadcasts were issued.
- Location: Malacca Strait, near Pulau Cula, Indonesia.
Incident 5:
- Six individuals armed with parangs were seen in the engine room while underway.
- The crew searched the vessel, but no perpetrators were found.
- The Chief Engineer’s hands were tied, causing wrist pain, and engine spares were stolen.
- The incident was reported to Singapore VTIS, and safety broadcasts were issued.
- Location: Malacca Strait, near Batu Berhanti, Indonesia.
