In a major development, BIMCO has announced that they are making changes to their structure to represent the importance of the environment while maintaining the debate on safety matters, reports Safety4Sea.
Environment & Safety Committees?
As decided by the BIMCO Board of Directors in December, the Association will have a Marine Environment Committee and a Maritime Safety and Security Committee. The existing committee structure included the safety and environment agendas that were covered by the Marine Committee.
Proposed Committee Structure
- The new structure will include shipping’s trends, as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, biofouling management and ballast water management.
- In addition, the safety and security agenda will include topics such as: piracy, drug smuggling, container fires and cyber risk management.
- Also, the two committees will have up to 15 members, excluding the Chair.
- The people in the committees are recruited from BIMCO’s member-companies drawn from small, medium sized and large shipowners.

BIMCO has a lean committee structure. The three main committees, Documentary, Marine Environment and Maritime Safety and Security meet twice per year.
