The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, has released a statement regarding the escalating situation in the Black Sea and its potential effects on international shipping, reports IMO.

Call to Protect Seafarers and Ports

“As the situation continues to escalate in the Black Sea, I call on all parties to refrain from targeting innocent seafarers, port workers and merchant ships. Shipping should not be used as collateral in geopolitical situations, and there is an increased environmental risk developing.”

Environmental and Trade Concerns

In his statement, he emphasises the increasing worries about environmental risks that come with the ongoing tensions, as well as the wider implications for the safety and continuity of maritime trade.

IMO Ready to Support Negotiations

“I remain ready to support any negotiation efforts to allow international shipping trade to continue for the benefit of all.”
