- SEEMP Part III Revisions Needed by End of 2025.
- Shipowners Must Submit Updated SEEMP Plans by October.
- IMO Finalises CII Reduction Timeline, Triggers Compliance Push.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has officially confirmed the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) reduction factors for ships over 5,000 GT, extending through 2030. This means that shipowners will need to update their Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) Part III to meet these new targets, reports LR.
Time to Revise SEEMP Part III
According to MEPC.400(83), any ships with an approved SEEMP Part III are now required to include an implementation plan for the years 2026 to 2028, detailing how they plan to comply with the updated CII requirements. This aligns with the guidelines established in MEPC.347(78) regarding verification and audits.
Deadline for Submission is Near
The updated SEEMP Part III must receive approval by December 31, 2025. To ensure everything is processed on time, Lloyd’s Register (LR) suggests submitting it by October 30, 2025. This way, the Confirmation of Compliance can be issued before the January 1, 2026, deadline, as mandated by MARPOL Annexe VI Regulation 5.
Guidelines for New and Transferred Ships
For new vessels or those changing their flag or management, a SEEMP Part III can be submitted that includes the extended plan up to 2028, which helps avoid the need for reapproval later in the year.
