IMO Sets Speed Limits For Whales WSC Unveils Global Whale Chart

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced a voluntary speed restriction scheme in the North-West Mediterranean Sea to safeguard local whale populations. Simultaneously, the World Shipping Council (WSC) has released a global whale chart, aiding seafarers in navigating areas prone to vessel-whale collisions.

Protective Measures in the Mediterranean

The IMO designates the North-Western Mediterranean Sea as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA), implementing voluntary speed reductions for vessels in whale habitats. This initiative urges ships to navigate with caution and reduce speeds to 10-13 knots. The PSSA spans the coastlines of France, Italy, Monaco, and Spain.

WSC Whale Chart for Global Navigation

To enhance seafarer awareness and compliance with global whale protection initiatives, the WSC introduces the Whale Chart. This comprehensive map outlines mandatory and voluntary measures worldwide, offering critical navigational coordinates and graphics. The chart aims to minimize ship strikes and protect endangered whale populations globally.
