Implementation Of Cybutryne Restrictions In Shipbuilding

443

ClassNK Technical Information No.TEC-1309, issued on 12 October 2023, details the implementation of restrictions on the use of cybutryne as an anti-fouling system since January 2023. This regulatory update is in line with amendments to the Guidelines for the Development of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (Res. MEPC.269(68)), adopted at MEPC.80 in July 2023.

Cybutryne Inclusion in Hazardous Materials Inventory (IHM)

As per RESOLUTION MEPC.379(80), cybutryne has been added to the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) under the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009. This necessitates updates to guidelines and procedures for both new ship constructions and existing ships in operation.

Mandatory Material Declaration (MD) Updates for Shipbuilding

Starting from December 2023, building shipyards are mandated to receive Material Declarations (MD) in an updated form, which includes cybutryne, from suppliers. This requirement extends to both new ship constructions, facilitated by the modification of PrimeShip-GREEN/SRM, and immediate updates for ships already in operation. Suppliers play a crucial role in ensuring compliance by providing the necessary information to shipyards promptly.
