IMRF Wins Major $450K Grant to Transform Maritime Rescue Training

The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) has secured a grant of US $450,000 from The TK Foundation to build the world’s first free global e-learning platform for maritime search and rescue (SAR) professionals and commercial seafarers.

This three-year initiative aims to strengthen training, reduce knowledge gaps, and raise standards across the global SAR community. The platform will operate at no cost for SAR organizations and maritime professionals who lack the resources to access advanced training. IMRF members will receive full access to all modules and materials.

$450K Grant for World’s First Free SAR Training Hub

Roughly 300,000 people drown annually worldwide—including seafarers, fishers, ferry passengers, and migrants—many of whom might survive given more consistent and high-quality training. The new e-learning system will be built around the framework of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manuals, converting its guidance into scenario-based, interactive content.

Core elements such as planning, coordination, communication, and operational decision-making will be covered. The platform will also tackle emerging challenges: climate change, mass rescue in humanitarian crises, and the mental health and resilience of SAR personnel.

Caroline Jupe, Chief Executive of IMRF, said the grant will enable the organization “to create a global learning platform that strengthens the knowledge and practical experience of SAR personnel and commercial shipping crews worldwide, giving them the skills and confidence they need to respond effectively when every second counts.

Dennis Treleaven, Maritime Program Officer at The TK Foundation, praised the initiative, calling it “an innovative and practical response to one of the most pressing challenges in maritime safety. By investing in training, we’re investing in people — the rescuers, crews, and communities who depend on these vital skills to save lives.”

The project will be delivered in collaboration with a global advisory board and partner organizations, leveraging IMRF’s existing SAR Academy, which already reaches learners in over 70 countries. Live “train-the-trainer” events will support the rollout and adoption of the materials.

The first modules are slated for release in early 2026, with additional content to be rolled out progressively over the following three years.
