Incat Launches World’s Largest Battery-Electric Ship In Tasmania

10

Tasmania has become home to a maritime milestone with the official launch of Incat Hull 096, the world’s largest battery-electric vessel. Commissioned by South American ferry operator Buquebus, this groundbreaking ferry sets a new benchmark in zero-emission passenger transport, operating entirely on battery power across the River Plate.

Revolutionary Battery Power for Sustainable Travel

The 130-meter ferry is powered by over 250 tonnes of batteries, delivering more than 40 megawatt-hours of capacity via a state-of-the-art Energy Storage System (ESS). This ESS is the largest ever installed on a ship—four times bigger than any previous system—and drives eight electric waterjets supplied by Wärtsilä. The result is a fully electric high-speed ferry that carries 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles with zero emissions.

A New Chapter for Buquebus and Incat

Incat Hull 096 marks the ninth vessel built by Incat for Buquebus, reflecting a long-standing partnership focused on innovation and sustainability. This latest project represents a significant leap forward in clean ferry transportation between Buenos Aires and Uruguay, setting the stage for future all-electric ferry fleets.

Next Steps: Interior Fit-Out and Sea Trials

While the vessel has been launched, work continues to complete the interior, including a record-breaking 2,300 square meter duty-free retail deck—the largest of its kind on any ferry. Final battery installation and energy system integration are underway, with sea trials scheduled later this year on the River Derwent.
