India has just launched a 1 MW green hydrogen power plant at Kandla Port, marking a big step forward in the country’s mission to boost clean energy in the maritime sector. This project, developed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), was officially inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, reports Offshore Energy.

Minister Hails Project as Step Toward 2030 Vision

Describing the development as a “major step towards fulfilling PM Shri Narendra Modi ji’s 2030 vision,” Sonowal emphasised the project’s importance in India’s clean energy transition. Referring to the Prime Minister’s earlier foundation stone laying for a 10 MW green hydrogen plant in May 2025, he noted the successful and timely commissioning of this 1 MW module as a “new benchmark for implementation in India’s green hydrogen ecosystem.”

Speed, Scale, and Skill Highlighted in Project Execution

Praising the efforts of those involved, Sonowal stated: “DPA has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030.”

He also extended his congratulations to DPA and Indian engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T), saying: “I commend the entire team of Deendayal Port Authority, led by the Chairman, and appreciate the engineers of L&T for delivering this complex project with remarkable speed and precision.”

Clean Energy Leadership and Sustainability Emphasised

Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, highlighted India’s leadership in clean energy innovation, stating: “The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. I congratulate the entire team for taking this bold step towards a sustainable maritime future.”

Plant Capacity and Its Role in Maritime Decarbonization

The newly launched plant has the capacity to produce about 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen each year. It’s anticipated to be a key player in advancing maritime decarbonization and fostering more sustainable operations at ports.

₹570 Billion Infrastructure Investment for Kandla Port

In a separate initiative, at the beginning of 2025, Minister Sonowal kicked off two significant infrastructure projects worth ₹570 billion (around $6.6 billion) aimed at boosting Kandla Port’s capacity. These projects are designed to enhance operational efficiency, facilitate the handling of both dry and liquid cargo, create new job opportunities, and shorten the turnaround times for vessels, especially those transporting liquid cargo.
