India Designates Three Major Ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs

5

In line with India’s ambitious climate goals and energy transition strategy, the recognition of three major ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs marks a key step under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Designated Green Hydrogen Hubs

The government has formally designated the following three major ports as Green Hydrogen Hubs (GHHs):

  • Deendayal Port in Gujarat
  • V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu
  • Paradip Port in Odisha

Strategic Role of the Ports

These ports are strategically positioned to become critical centers in the development of India’s hydrogen ecosystem, serving multiple functions:

  • Catalysts for Innovation: They will act as drivers for clean energy innovation and help establish a robust hydrogen ecosystem.
  • Gateways for Export: The ports will leverage their strategic positions along global trade routes to facilitate the export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, like green ammonia, aligning with the mission’s goal of making India a global hub.
  • Infrastructure Convergence: They are ideal locations for a cluster-based development model due to their high energy demand, existing industrial activity, and connectivity, which supports infrastructure integration and achieves economies of scale.
  • Net-Zero Goal: As strategic points in the maritime sector, they will play a vital role in the country’s efforts to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2070.

Expected Outcomes of the Recognition

The designation of these ports under the National Green Hydrogen Mission is expected to accelerate India’s clean energy transition by directly leading to:

  • Attraction of Investments: They are expected to attract significant green investments into the clean energy sector.
  • Industrial Participation: The recognition is anticipated to speed up industrial participation in green hydrogen production and utilization.
  • Promotion of Innovation: The hubs will encourage innovation in clean fuel technologies, solidifying India’s position in this sunrise sector.
  • Eligibility for Incentives: Projects established within these designated port areas are eligible to access incentives and benefits available under other relevant central and state government schemes, including those linked to the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The designation of Green Hydrogen Hubs is part of the larger framework set out by the government:

  • Cluster-Based Model: The Mission follows this model to overcome logistical challenges in long-distance hydrogen transport, enhance early-stage project viability, and achieve economies of scale.
  • Identification Framework: Green Hydrogen Hubs and Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters (HVICs) provide the essential framework to identify and develop regions suitable for large-scale hydrogen activities.
  • Overarching Objective: The primary goal is to make India a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, contributing to decarbonization and reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports.
