Indian Navy, which is on a mission in the Gulf of Aden to combat piracy, recently responded to a distress call from a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, sources Times Of India.

No Casualties

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported among the 22 crew members, 9 of whom are Indian nationals. “The INS Visakhapatnam, mission deployed in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy operations, swiftly responded to a distress call by Marshall Island flagged vessel following a drone attack at 2311 hours on January 17,” the Navy said. It said the warship intercepted the vessels at 0030 hours Thursday to assist.

After conducting a thorough inspection, the EOD specialists declared the area safe for further transit. As a result, the vessel is now proceeding to its next port of call. Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said INS Visakhapatnam was undertaking anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency confirmed on Wednesday that they received a report of a vessel being targeted by an “uncrewed aerial system” about 60 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen.

Combating Piracy

Over the last few days, several civilian as well as military ships have come under attack by Houthi rebels of Yemen in the Red Sea and its nearby region. The attacks have disrupted shipping on the crucial trade route. To counter the threats, India has deployed over 10 frontline warships with marine commandos in the region stretching from the north and central Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The Navy increased its prowess in the region to show the flag and deter piracy and drone strikes. The unprecedented ‘enhanced maritime security operations’ are being conducted independently by India.

  1. It seems like you are an authority on this subject—as if you wrote the book on it or something. Though I think you could clarify your arguments a bit more with some photos, other than that, this is a fantastic site and I will certainly be back.
