The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a prominent international classification society, is playing a crucial role in advancing India’s defence capabilities. As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, IRS is contributing to the nation’s self-reliant defence manufacturing by providing classification services for significant construction projects for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.

Key New Construction Projects

IRS is involved in several cutting-edge projects across multiple shipyards, including:

  • Fleet Support Ships: Second vessel under construction at L&T Shipbuilding.
  • Next Generation Missile Vessel: First vessel being built at Cochin Shipyard Ltd.
  • Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessels: Second Next Generation vessel and first Fast Patrol Vessels at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd.
  • Cadet Training Ship: Keel laying of the third vessel at L&T.

Challenges and Technical Excellence

The simultaneous development of modern naval platforms like the Next Generation Missile Vessels and Fleet Support Ships poses unique challenges, testing IRS’s technical capabilities and operational capacity.
