- Wireless EV Charging Pioneer Targets Greener Ports with ZEPA Alliance.
- Revolutionizing Port Electrification: InductEV’s Wireless Charging Solution.
- InductEV Expands into Ports with ZEPA to Decarbonize 120,000 Units of CHE.
Wireless EV charging innovator InductEV has joined the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) to support the acceleration of port decarbonisation and the affordability and accessibility of battery-electric container handling equipment (BE-CHE). ZEPA projects that around 120,000 units of container handling equipment emitting 10-15 million tons of CO2e every year will have to be replaced by more sustainable alternatives, reports Inductev.
Deployments and Future Growth
Building on its success with municipal transit agencies in North America and Europe, InductEV’s high-power inductive wireless charging system is operational at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is slated for installation at a major West Coast port facility in the United States.
The company’s wireless EV charging technology provides economic and environmental advantages, improving fleet utilization and reducing capital expenditure costs for fleet owners and port operators.
ZEPA’s Mission and Focus Areas
InductEV shares ZEPA’s vision for the electrification of the global port industry. James Wroe, InductEV’s Managing Director for Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We embrace the mission of ZEPA and share in its members’ vision for the electric future of the 940 container ports around the world. This industry is at a tipping point, and we’re excited to demonstrate the role wireless, opportunistic charging can play in this vital transformation.”
ZEPA’s Main Focus Areas
- Scaling Up Production Capacity: Scaling up production and reducing lead times for BE-CHE manufacturers while lowering costs.
- Reducing Cost and Standardizing Solutions: Costs for batteries and charging solutions are to be reduced, and implementation processes are to be simplified by standardization.
- Cost-Effective Infrastructure Rollout: Enabling affordable roll-out of power infrastructure for battery-electric CHE, shore power, and other cargo segments.
- Improving Market Conditions: Facilitating favourable conditions to enhance the adoption of untethered battery-electric CHE.
Shifting the Charging Paradigm
The company’s approach flips the charging process upside down by moving from overnight, wired depot charging to more efficient, on-route charging throughout the day. This method presents several benefits: Increasing on-route utilisation of clean energy, Reducing friction for electrification with power utilities and Improving operational efficiency for fleet operators. Addressing these challenges, InductEV puts itself on the front line to play a key role in decarbonising the port industry and supporting ZEPA’s vision for sustainable electric ports.
