An inland cargo vessel was damaged following a collision with a sheet pile wall near the Ellinghauser Straße bridge in Dortmund, Germany, reports MarineTraffic. The incident occurred while the vessel was navigating inland waterways, with no injuries or pollution reported.

Incident Details

The collision took place at approximately 6:24 pm local time as the vessel was carrying a cargo of scrap metal. The impact caused substantial damage to the bow, including a crack in the hull that allowed water to enter the forward section. As a result, the vessel experienced flooding in the bow area and a temporary loss of onboard power.

Despite the damage, the vessel was able to continue under its own power to Hardenberg harbor, where it was safely moored.

Emergency Response and Stabilisation

Firefighters responded to the incident and provided assistance to the vessel. A generator from a fireboat was deployed to restore temporary power, enabling the operation of a submersible pump to reduce the water level inside the affected section.

To further stabilise the situation, port personnel at Hardenberg used an excavator to unload the scrap metal cargo. This operation ensured that the damaged bow section was no longer submerged, preventing additional water ingress.

Investigation Ongoing

Following these measures, the vessel’s onboard power supply was fully restored. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the relevant authorities.
