INTERCARGO Holds First-Ever China Meeting To Address Dry Bulk Shipping Challenges

10

INTERCARGO, the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, held its semi-annual meetings in Guangzhou for the first time, hosted by COSCO Shipping Bulk. The two-day event brought together global industry leaders to discuss critical issues in dry bulk shipping—ranging from sustainability to safety and compliance—as the sector navigates a time of significant regulatory and operational transformation.

Emission Regulations and Sustainability Dominate Discussions

A major focus of the meetings was the industry’s response to climate-related regulations, especially in light of new directives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union, including the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime.

Members reaffirmed their support for global decarbonization goals but emphasized the importance of applying regulations pragmatically to avoid unintended burdens on operators. The pathway to net zero emissions remains a shared ambition, but one that demands feasible implementation across diverse shipping operations.

Tackling Operational Challenges: Safety, Cybersecurity, and Ship Recycling

Participants examined a range of operational issues, including the increasing complexity of ship recycling requirements, digitalisation, and cyber risks—all of which require greater attention in the modern maritime environment.

INTERCARGO’s Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) and its Quality Panels were highlighted as essential tools in ensuring high standards for port compliance and ship vetting. The meetings underscored the importance of aligning safety protocols and performance metrics across global fleets.

Strengthening Collaboration and Future Planning

INTERCARGO Chairman John Xylas noted that the Guangzhou meetings came at a pivotal time for the dry bulk industry. He emphasized the value of collective dialogue in navigating shared challenges, particularly in balancing sustainability, safety, and efficiency. The Association also announced the admission of new members, reinforcing its growing influence in the sector.

The next round of meetings is scheduled for 2–4 November 2025 in Athens, continuing INTERCARGO’s mission to foster collaboration and improve standards across the dry cargo industry.
