InterManager has launched a campaign to address the criminalization of seafarers, urging industry stakeholders to report incidents for a comprehensive data collection effort. Preliminary statistics reveal that ship Masters are most at risk (63% of cases), with tankers being the most affected vessel type (29%), reports SAFETY4SEA.

New Campaign by InterManager

InterManager is urging maritime organizations to join its initiative addressing the criminalization of seafarers.

The Association is collecting data to understand the issue’s scale and share insights with the IMO and other stakeholders.

Criminalisation Statistics

  1. Incidents Identified: 118 cases reported so far, with numbers peaking in 2023 (23 cases).
  2. Common Targets: Ship’s Masters (63%) and tanker crews (29%).
  3. Regions Affected: Asia reports the highest cases, followed by Europe and the Americas.

Notable Case

Polish Captain Andrzej Lasota faced 592 days of imprisonment in Mexico for unawareness of cocaine buried in his ship’s cargo.

Despite compliance in reporting the drugs, he endured harsh conditions before his eventual release.

Call for Collaboration

InterManager emphasizes the importance of collective reporting.

This is to improve seafarer protection and reduce incidents of criminalization.
