INTERTANKO Releases Guidance to Help Seafarers Move into Shore-Based Roles

18

  • INTERTANKO released a guidance document to help seafarers shift from sea jobs to shore-based careers.
  • Many seafarers struggle during this move, and some return to sea due to lack of awareness.
  • The initiative supports long-term training, recruitment and career development in the maritime sector.

INTERTANKO has issued a new press release introducing its Seafarers’ Initiative: Guidance for seagoing professionals moving ashore. The aim is to support seafarers preparing for shore-based roles and help companies manage these transitions better, reports MaritimeSutra.

Helping Seafarers Navigate the Move Ashore

The guidance document highlights that many seafarers face challenges when shifting to office roles. Some are not fully aware of the lifestyle and work changes, which leads a few to return to sea.

Venetia Kallipolitou said that seafarers bring strong professionalism and skills, which are valuable for superintendent and office positions. She noted that this guidance fills an important gap in industry support.

Encouraging Thoughtful Career Decisions

Kallipolitou also mentioned that seafarers should not make this move blindly. Family needs and the impact of shore-based work should be considered. She thanked the Members who contributed to creating the document to help both seafarers and employers.

Part of INTERTANKO’s Wider Seafarers’ Initiative

The guidance is a key part of INTERTANKO’s broader Seafarers’ Initiative, led by Paolo d’Amico. The programme focuses on recruitment, training and professional growth. He and Chairman Rolf Westfal-Larsen Jr. were present at the launch, showing their full support.
