This colossal vessel, the world’s largest by gross tonnage, not only introduces a groundbreaking ship class but also showcases a host of innovative features and amenities that redefine the cruise experience.

Innovation from Scratch: Designing the Icon of the Seas

Spearheading the project, Sascha Lang, Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Vice President of Architectural and Design Newbuild and Innovation, sheds light on the ship’s conception. “Icon of the Seas is what you would call a ‘white paper’ ship, meaning we went back to the drawing board and designed it from scratch rather than developing a pre-existing concept,” Lang reveals. The ship, constructed by Meyer Turku in Finland, boasts a capacity for 7,600 passengers and a gross tonnage of 248,663, making it the largest in the world.

The journey from conception to reality spanned seven years, with Lang emphasizing the uniqueness of Royal Caribbean’s in-house design team. “We are the only cruise line in the industry to have an inhouse newbuild team who lead the design process,” Lang notes. The 42-member team, comprising specialists in fields ranging from naval architecture to interior design, played a pivotal role in crafting the Icon class, designed entirely within Royal Caribbean’s Innovation Lab adjacent to its corporate headquarters in Port Miami.

Lang elaborates on the significance of the Innovation Lab, stating, “The space allows us to experiment internally as well as with vendors, architects, designers, and other industry leaders.” This cutting-edge facility leverages virtual reality and animation technology to create lifelike, 3D views of the shipbuilding process, enabling efficient and effective design.

Neighborhoods Redefined: A Tour of Iconic Spaces

Icon of the Seas features five distinct neighborhoods, each designed with a unique purpose. Lang emphasizes the emphasis on borderless connectivity, allowing guests to seamlessly explore different areas. Tailormade art curation enhances the overall design, with Caribbean artists contributing installations and murals throughout the ship.

The ship’s 28 room categories, including the Family Infinite Balcony cabin and the three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse, offer unprecedented choices for passengers. New additions such as the Caribbean-themed bar Lime & Coconut and the AquaDome neighborhood with its Overlook and Overlook Pods further contribute to the ship’s allure.

Lang concludes, “The driving force of what we do at Royal Caribbean is to deliver the best holidays we possibly can.” Icon of the Seas, a testament to the collaboration between dedicated teams and industry experts, stands as a bold and game-changing vision, promising passengers the world’s greatest family vacation.
