The APM Terminals-operated Port of Salalah has invested USD 300 million in expanding and ensuring readiness for the new network under the Gemini cooperation, reports APM Terminals.
Significant Expansion
The Port of Salalah has undergone a significant expansion, increasing its capacity from 4.5 million TEUs to 6.5 million TEUs. This expansion involved upgrades to all six existing berths and a yard expansion. These improvements solidify the Port of Salalah’s position as a key regional hub, providing ideal access to the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent, and East Africa.
APM Terminals’ investment in the expansion project also included a new access road, a new electrical power substation and electrical network upgrade, and a reefer expansion of 2,000 reefer plugs.
To support the increased capacity, the port has acquired new equipment, including 10 new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes capable of handling ultra-large vessels up to 26 containers wide. The new equipment also includes 12 hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, two reach stackers, six empty container handlers, and 30 terminal trucks and trailers.
Ongoing Commitment
Steven Yoogalingam, Port of Salalah CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to Oman and the region through this investment. He highlighted that the new capabilities will ensure smooth operations and create local and regional growth and job opportunities, particularly with the Gemini cooperation, welcoming the A.P. Moller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd network as part of the hub system.
Muhanna bin Moosa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology in Oman, stated that the expansion demonstrates their commitment to Oman’s economic objectives and Oman Vision 2040. He noted the ongoing strategic planning efforts with Salalah Port Company to optimize the port’s location and infrastructure. He highlighted the recent $300 million investment to upgrade the container terminal, increasing capacity from 4.5 million to 6.5 million TEUs, to stay ahead of rising maritime traffic and maintain a competitive edge.
The Port of Salalah has consistently ranked as the second most efficient container port globally in the 2023 Container Ports Performance Index (CPPI) for the third consecutive year. The recent upgrades, along with the ongoing implementation of Lean practices, are expected to further enhance efficiency and provide industry-leading port stay times.
