The Isle of Man Ship Registry (IOMSR) has made history by becoming the first flag state to join the SafetyTech Accelerator’s Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII). This initiative aims to fast-track solutions that monitor and cut down methane emissions from ships, all while supporting the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) greenhouse gas emissions targets. By bringing together shipowners, tech developers, classification societies, regulators, and now flag states, the program highlights the importance of collaboration within the maritime community. Involving flag states ensures that innovations are in line with global safety and regulatory standards, reports Safety4Sea.

Reinforcing Leadership in Sustainability

By signing on to MAMII, the IOMSR bolsters its standing as one of the most forward-thinking flag states in the world. It was the pioneer in offering reduced registration fees for vessels that utilise green technology and the first to join the Getting to Zero Coalition. The registry also received the SAFETY4SEA 2023 Sustainability Award and has been a supporter of the Eyesea maritime pollution NGO. Its commitment to sustainability aligns with four of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and includes investments in green technology.

Commitment to Collaboration

“Joining MAMII further demonstrates the IOMSR’s support for sustainable maritime operations. Collaboration is such an important part of fostering innovation, something we in the maritime industry can improve. The SafetyTech accelerator is a great place for industry to work on solving some of the big ‘real-world’ problems we all face,” said IOMSR director Cameron Mitchell.

Setting a Precedent for Innovation

Marius Suteu, Managing Director of SafetyTech Accelerator, emphasised the significance of IOMSR’s involvement: The Isle of Man’s leadership sets a vital example, ensuring that innovative methane abatement technologies are not just created but are also safely and effectively integrated into the global maritime fleet.
