The ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran, marked by direct military exchanges and the stated involvement of the US in missile defense, has dramatically deepened the regional crisis and cast a shadow over diplomatic efforts, particularly nuclear talks.

Direct Confrontation and US Involvement: Following an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13, Iran retaliated with missile launches at Israel. US officials have confirmed that Washington assisted Israel in shooting down Iranian missiles, a move that further intertwines the US in the conflict and deepens its rift with Tehran. This comes after the US failed to reach a nuclear deal with Iran within a 60-day deadline set by President Donald Trump.

Uncertainty for Nuclear Talks: The future of nuclear talks between the US and Iran, which were scheduled to resume on June 15, is now highly uncertain. Iran’s foreign ministry had not decided whether to attend as of June 14, according to IRNA. Reports on June 15 confirm that these talks have been called off, with Oman’s foreign minister stating that “diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace” despite the cancellation. Iran’s foreign minister also reportedly called the talks “meaningless” after Israel’s strikes.

Warnings and Red Lines: While the US had initially distanced itself from Israel’s major attack on June 13, President Trump later issued a stark warning on social media, suggesting that planned Israeli strikes could be “even more brutal.” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that attacks on civilians had crossed a “red line” for Israel, warning that Iran would “pay a heavy price.” The IDF claimed its own attacks stretched 1,500 km into Iran, hitting sites of “operational and national significance” and claiming responsibility for assassinating 20 Iranian commanders.

Threats to Commercial Shipping: Attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf are widely considered to be one of Iran’s most extreme military responses. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical choke point, facilitates roughly 30% of global oil trade and 20% of world LNG supplies. Historically, Tehran has avoided directly targeting the Strait of Hormuz.
