Iranian Oil Tankers Flee as Israeli Strike Threat Intensifies

68

Rising Tensions Between Israel and Iran

Rising tensions between Israel and Iran have led to a notable movement of Iranian oil tankers. Satellite images show these vessels leaving Kharg Island, Iran’s largest oil terminal, as the likelihood of Israeli strikes on the country’s oil infrastructure increases.

Biden’s Ambiguous Remarks

Adding to the uncertainty, U.S. President Joe Biden made ambiguous remarks when asked whether he would support Israeli strikes. He confirmed discussions were ongoing but did not provide a clear stance, leaving the region on edge.

Satellite Evidence of Tanker Movements

Military and shipping analysts have observed the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) moving its Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) away from Kharg Island. While satellite images from November 2023 showed over a dozen vessels off the coast, by early October 2024, the waters were clear of ships, signaling a precautionary response to the escalating threat.

Global Oil Market Concerns

This movement of Iranian tankers, coupled with the potential for conflict, has raised concerns about the impact on global oil markets, as the Middle East remains a critical hub for energy supplies.
