Iraq has made a big leap in broadening its maritime commerce with the opening of a new shipping line. On Wednesday, Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director of Iraq’s Ports, announced that a South Korean giant ship had arrived at Umm Qasr Port, which is a landmark in the nation’s maritime industry, reports Shafaq.
A Historic Milestone in Maritime Trade
In a statement to Shafaq News, Al-Fartousi characterized the debut of the new line as “an important historical step,” stressing that this trip is the first of its type. The arrival of the ship marks the start of a new age of trade cooperation between Iraq and South Korea, enhancing Iraq’s presence in international shipping.
South Korean Container Ship Arrives at Umm Qasr
The first giant container ship from the South Korean company HMM docked at Umm Qasr Port, underscoring the growing trade relationship between the two nations. According to Al-Fartousi, “The ship is 366 meters long, with a maximum capacity of 16,000 containers, although it arrived with a lower load.”
Strengthening Trade and Economic Prospects of Iraq
Al-Fartousi noted Iraq’s continued endeavours to strengthen cooperation with top maritime transportation countries to “achieve the best economic benefits.” He was also hopeful for the future, foreseeing an improved volume of goods and commodities coming through Iraqi ports. Greater trade volumes are projected to boost the economic growth of Iraq and further solidify its position as a player in international commerce.
