IRS and Cochin Shipyard Join Forces to Develop Indigenous Technologies

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) have signed an umbrella agreement in order to enhance their capabilities and develop indigenous technologies. Among these, they have also agreed to sign a cooperation agreement with the aim of developing and certifying an autonomous vessel named ‘SWAYAT,’ currently under construction at CSL as a fully indigenous pilot project, reports IR Class.

Advanced Technology Integration

The vessel will be equipped with the latest autonomous systems and components from partners such as KPIT and other Indian manufacturers. It will be in line with IRS Guidelines on Autonomous and Remotely Operated Vessels, thus adhering to global standards.

Cyber Security

Cyber security measures will be in line with IRS Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Safety to ensure the safety of operations.

Indigenous Innovation

The project will include certification of an indigenously developed navigation and communication suite, verified by IRS.

Academic Collaboration

The leading academic and research institutions are also supporting the design and simulation studies for the vessel.

Mr. T K Sahu, Joint MD of IRS stated, “It is a matter of great pride for IRS to be part of this prestigious project with CSL and their industry partners. This initiative demonstrates India’s indigenous capabilities in advanced technologies and aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. We believe the experience gained through this pilot project will further strengthen our processes for certifying vessels with advanced autonomy.”
