The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has successfully collaborated with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to demonstrate pioneering autonomous navigation technology on the tug MT Andaman. This marks a significant milestone in advancing maritime autonomy in India.
Comprehensive Testing and Review
Led by Mr. R. Srinivas, VP & HOD Electrical & Control System, the IRS team conducted an in-depth review of the autonomy concept and system documentation. They performed rigorous software quality checks and a detailed risk assessment in line with IRS Guidelines for Remotely Operated Vessels and Autonomous Surface Vessels. The autonomous system was thoroughly tested through simulations and approved Factory Acceptance Test procedures, ensuring its readiness for real-world application.
Installation and Verification
Following the installation of the autonomous systems on the MT Andaman, the IRS verified system functionality via the approved Harbor Acceptance Test procedure. This included remote control of propulsion and steering systems from a control centre (RCC) and monitoring key machinery and navigation parameters. These harbour trials ensured the autonomous system’s reliability and operational efficiency.
Successful Sea Trials
The IRS oversaw the autonomous sea trials on May 23rd and 24th, 2024, which demonstrated successful collision avoidance and emergency response measures, adhering to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG). The Indian Navy supported these trials, ensuring safety and contributing to the success of the testing process. This achievement underscores the potential for autonomous vessels in mission-critical operations, aligning with the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and enhancing opportunities for Indian system developers and shipyards.
Cdr. K.K. Dhawan, Head of Defence of IRS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to advancing the Indian maritime industry through cutting-edge autonomous technology, positioning IRS as a leader in developing and ensuring the safety and quality of advanced autonomous systems.
