- Defence Projects Mark Major National Milestones.
- Digital Twins and Nuclear Propulsion Shape Technical Strategy.
- Research Output Strengthens Global Safety Contribution.
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) had a remarkable year in 2025, making significant strides in defence, the merchant marine sector, digital innovation, and research. This solid performance has further solidified its role as a vital technical partner for governments, shipowners, and shipyards, especially during these rapidly changing times in the maritime industry, reports SMI.
Merchant Marine Goes Global
In 2025, the IRS broadened its reach in international merchant marine projects. They completed their first newbuilding for Penguin Shipyard in Singapore and delivered a vessel to a Korean owner through IRS Korea. Major global players like CMA CGM and Maersk continued to trust IRS, with their vessels being classed during the year, showcasing the organisation’s technical know-how and quick response.
Strengthening Presence in the Middle East
IRS also expanded its presence in the Middle East by opening a new office in Saudi Arabia to cater to the increasing activity in the region. Since January 2025, they have classed a total of 115 vessels of various sizes and purposes, both in India and abroad. The IRS played a crucial role in supporting the modernisation of India’s naval fleet throughout the year.
A National First for Fleet Support Ships
The organisation achieved a significant milestone by completing the single classing of the Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ships, a first for the nation. IRS was instrumental in the delivery and commissioning of Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes, Large Survey Vessels, and Diving Support Vessels. A notable achievement was overseeing the refit of the submarine INS Sindhukirti, marking the first time an Indian classification society managed an EKM-class submarine refit. Throughout the year, digital innovation remained a key focus for the IRS.
Virtual Twin Technology Takes a Leap Forward
The IRS has made significant strides in rolling out virtual twin technology, enhancing life cycle assessments and 3D classification processes. They’ve also bolstered their capabilities in predictive analysis and remote-ready classification solutions. During the London International Shipping Week, IRS took part in a specialised roundtable discussion, exploring the long-term potential of nuclear propulsion for deep-sea decarbonization and the evolving safety frameworks that come with it.
Boosting Inland Waterway Development
The organisation has ramped up its efforts in inland waterway infrastructure by collaborating with Rhenus Logistics India on a feasibility study. Additionally, the IRS has been proactive in promoting knowledge sharing within the ship recycling sector, hosting a seminar in Bhavnagar focused on safe and sustainable recycling practices.
Research Fuels Technical Advancements
Research and development remain at the heart of IRS’s technical progress. They’ve made headway in AI-driven FEML automation, computational fluid dynamics aimed at improving rotor sail efficiency, and full-scale powering predictions, with their findings featured in international journals. Other initiatives include conducting hydrogen fuel risk analyses, IMDG training, and an underwater welding program in partnership with IIT Guwahati. IRS has also developed oil spill contingency plans for major ports, vetted by the Indian Coast Guard, and contributed to IMO and IACS projects that are shaping future global safety standards.
Chairman Reflects on 2025
Reflecting on the year, Mr Arun Sharma. (pictured), Executive Chairman of IRS, said:
“Our work in 2025 demonstrates the trust placed in IRS across defence and commercial shipping and highlights the importance of rigorous, future-ready technical assurance. The maritime industry is entering a period defined by complex regulation, emerging technologies and major shifts in fuel strategy. We are strengthening our capability and broadening our research partnerships, while continuing to support national and international clients with the highest standards of safety and technical integrity. This will remain our priority as the industry prepares for the next phase of transformation.”
Anticipating Growth in 2026
Looking forward to 2026, the IRS is optimistic about a continued rise in demand for advanced technical assurance in both defence and commercial shipping sectors. They expect a greater embrace of digital classification tools as virtual twin technology starts to influence survey planning and asset management. The readiness for alternative fuels is also projected to grow, especially in hydrogen, biofuels, and methanol.
A Solid Foundation for the Coming Year
With a robust foundation laid in 2025, IRS is stepping into the new year with a strong focus on innovation, safety, and deeper collaboration within the industry, all while supporting clients through evolving regulations and rapid technological advancements.
