Ahead of the enforcement of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) in June, the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) organized a seminar in Bhavnagar near Alang. Titled ‘Sustainable Ship Recycling: Charting India’s Course to Global Leadership’, the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss India’s preparedness and potential to lead in eco-friendly ship recycling practices.

Collaborative Path Toward Greener Ship Recycling

The seminar saw active participation from the Ship Recycling Industries Association (SRIA), Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), and representatives from ship recycling yards. Speakers including Capt Rakesh Mishra and Mr. A J Rathod emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration in transforming India’s ship recycling sector. Discussions focused on enhancing safety and environmental standards, especially as India positions itself as a global leader in sustainable recycling.

Preparing for the Future of Fuel-Efficient Vessels

A key highlight of the seminar was the emerging challenge of recycling ships powered by alternative fuels like batteries, ammonia, methanol, and even nuclear technologies. Experts stressed the need for modern infrastructure, highly trained personnel, and updated safety protocols to handle these next-generation vessels.

The IRClass Academy was spotlighted as a valuable resource for building technical capacity. IRS Joint MD Mr. T. K. Sahu concluded by reinforcing that sustainable recycling is not just a compliance issue but a shared responsibility for industry advancement.

Training and Capacity Building for a Safer Future

Recognizing that technical expertise is essential, the seminar also focused on capacity building through education and training. The IRClass Academy was praised for offering targeted training programs that equip workers and industry professionals with the skills required to safely dismantle and recycle modern ships. IRS Joint MD Mr. T.K. Sahu emphasized that safety and environmental responsibility must be ingrained across all levels of the industry to maintain India’s leadership in ship recycling.
