Facebook to file a lawsuit against a Ukrainian programmer for allegedly scraping and selling publicly accessible information from millions of Facebook users as reported by USA Today.

 An Alarming Incident

Facebook is suing a Ukrainian programmer for allegedly scraping and selling information from millions of Facebook users that was publicly available.

The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in the Northern District of California on Thursday, accuses freelance programmer Alexander Alexandrovich Solonchenko of scraping phone numbers and Facebook user IDs from around 178 million accounts in 2018 and 2019.

In May 2021, Solonchenko reportedly sold the data on an internet marketplace.

According to the lawsuit, the majority of the stolen data belonged to consumers in the United States.

Solonchenko’s Facebook and Instagram profiles have been deactivated, and his account has been cancelled by the internet giant.
