The Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) detained a containership in Genoa, for not being fully compliant with the requirements for limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, reports Safety4sea.

The move was initiated following a safety inspection carried out on board the vessel by personnel from the Port State Control Inspection Unit. Despite possessing valid certifications issued by the flag state confirming compliance with international MARPOL conventions, the containership was found to be non-compliant with regulations limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

According to local reports, it was found that several components of the onboard electric generators lacked the identification elements of conformity required by legislation and the NOx Technical Code for the prevention of air pollution. As a result, it could not be ensured that the ship operates within the parameters needed to keep NOx emissions within regulatory limits.

As stated, the inspection covered all operational areas of the vessel and also included an emergency drill to assess crew preparedness. Furthermore, the ship will only be permitted to depart once all deficiencies have been rectified under the supervision of the flag administration and classification society and after passing a final inspection by the Port State Control team.

The Genoa Coast Guard reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, noting that its enforcement actions in 2025 alone resulted in the administrative detention of ten vessels due to non-compliance with international maritime regulations.
