ITF Launches ‘Women At Sea’ Website To Support Women Seafarers

As part of International Women’s Day 2025, Nautilus International participated in the launch of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)’s new website for women seafarers on 7 March 2025.

A Platform for Inclusion and Support

The Women at Sea website, developed by ITF affiliates, aims to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the maritime industry. It seeks to create a global support network for women seafarers while also encouraging membership in ITF-affiliated trade unions.

Industry Experts Discuss Challenges and Solutions

A panel discussion featured female working seafarers and industry leaders, sharing their insights on fostering a more inclusive maritime sector.

  • Elisza Chomi, a chief engineer and fleet manager, highlighted the challenges of adapting to new technologies, larger ship sizes, and green shipping advancements. She emphasized the need for continuous learning to stay prepared for these changes.
  • A Maersk representative addressed ongoing challenges such as:
    • Safer protective equipment tailored to women.
    • Better vessel design for inclusivity.
    • Training programs to ensure respectful workplace interactions.

Key Figures in Maritime Leadership Support the Initiative

The session was chaired by ITF maritime coordinator Jacqueline Smith and featured participation from International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez.

The Women at Sea initiative marks a significant step toward gender inclusivity in the maritime industry, providing a dedicated platform for support, networking, and professional growth for women seafarers worldwide.
