- JAK Opens Basra Search & Rescue Centre.
- Iraq’s SAR Fleet Expands with Damen Vessels.
- New SAR Fleet Strengthens Iraq’s Coast.
Jawar Al Khaleej (JAK) has undertaken the ambitious venture of establishing and operating a state-of-the-art search and rescue centre in Basra, Iraq. In cooperation with the government-owned general company for ports of Iraq, this will enhance rescue capabilities in Iraqi waters. New vessels under design by Damen Shipyards will significantly improve search and rescue operations in the region., reports Damen.
State-of-the-Art Vessels Equipped for Search & Rescue
The standard Damen designs that the newly purchased search and rescue boats are based on are fully prepared for emergency operations. These boats comprise night vision cameras, onboard CCTV, man overboard platforms, stretchers, first aid equipment, and oxygen supplies advanced technology items. Such features ensure that these boats can be used to respond to various rescue situations either taken offshore or in the rivers of Iraq.
Damen SAR 1906: Next-Generation Rescue Vessel
In addition to the new, delivered boats, there is an order for a Damen Search and Rescue (SAR) 1906 to JAK. This vessel, developed by Damen in cooperation with the KNRM, Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution, is a new-generation rescue boat.
From capsizing or even 360° roll, the SAR 1906 will automatically be righted within mere seconds. That would make it a very reliable asset in even the worst sea conditions. The SAR 1906 has been proven in operations with the KNRM and the Turkish Coastguard and is certain to become a cornerstone of Iraq’s search and rescue efforts.
Completion of Jawar 31 Conversion
JAK attends the handover ceremony of the three new SAR vessels on board. It also marks the conversion of Jawar 31, an upgraded version of the original 122-meter vessel into a new building standard.
The conversion has been conducted by Albwardy Damen. Now its a multi-purpose heavy-lift ship, it has oil response capabilities and carries a fully electric 250-tonne class crawler crane.
Strategic Importance of Iraq’s Coastline
Although Iraq’s coastline is only 58 kilometres long, it does still form the backbone of this country’s economy. Of the exported oil from Iraq, it is estimated that 80% comes directly from the Al Basra Oil Terminal.
The JAK Search & Rescue Centre will therefore greatly augment rescue capabilities. Not just offshore, but also along the busy rivers that flow through Iraq. Thus ensuring safety for both commercial operations and local communities.
A Strong Partnership with Damen Shipyards
Pascal Slingerland, Regional Sales Director Middle East at Damen Shipyards, expressed his appreciation for JAK’s continued trust in Damen vessels. “Over the past two decades, we have delivered more than 20 vessels to JAK, including 14 that were supplied five years ago for terminal operations. JAK’s dedication to maintaining its fleet has resulted in minimal wear and tear on the vessels, thanks to Damen’s new-building standards and superior maintenance practices.”
Collaboration with Key Industry Leaders
The handover event organized by JAK, saw notable industry key suppliers such as Liebherr (cranes), Lamor (oil recovery equipment), ABS (class society), Watertek, Albwardy Damen and Damen.
The handover event represented such a collaboration between these industry leaders. It depicted the combined efforts in offering cutting-edge vessels to enhance Iraq’s search and rescue mission.
A Message of Gratitude from JAK’s Chairman
Dr. Baydaq Al Jazaeri, Chairman of JAK, expressed his gratitude for the successful collaborations that made the delivery of these vessels possible. “We are honoured by the trust placed in us by GCPI and the Iraqi government to manage critical oil spill response and search and rescue operations.
