In 2024, container shipments from Japan to the United States stood at 643,433 TEUs, an increase of 5.7% compared to the previous year. Direct shipments rose by 13.8% at 445,147 TEUs. Tokyo accounted for 182,538 TEUs, which equated to 8.9% and Nagoya 129,529 TEUs, gaining 17.4%. Kobe accounted for 91,380 TEUs, which indicated an 11.1% rise, while Yokohama shipped 30,715 TEUs, which reflected a fantastic 27.6% increase. Shimizu suffered from a decline recording 3,964 TEUs, which indicates a decrease of 18.8%, reports Container News.
Transshipped Containers
Transshipped containers amounted to 198,286 TEUs; at a year-over-year decrease of 9%. Containers exported from Japan to the United States totalled 48,739 TEUs, up 0.1% from last year’s month and the third consecutive monthly increase.
Shipments by Port
Direct shipments increased by 2.1% to 34,264 TEUs, while transshipped containers decreased by 4.4% to 14,475 TEUs. Transshipped containers accounted for 29.7% of the monthly total.
Port-Specific Performance in December
Tokyo had shipped 14,096 TEUs in the same month of the previous year with a decrease of 2.6%. Nagoya was able to ship 9,902 TEUs with an increase of 3.1%. Kobe was also able to send 6,980 TEUs, an increase of 7.8%. Yokohama recorded 2,428 TEUs with an increase of 18.8%. Meanwhile, Shimizu has shipped 347 TEUs, decreasing by 15.2%.
