Japanese refiner Cosmo Oil has partnered with Japanese logistics firm NX Shoji to supply 24pc biodiesel-blended fuel oil (B24) to ships at the Port of Tokyo from this autumn, reports Argus Media.

Cosmo Oil will supply NX Shoji with heavy Oil A for blending with fatty acid methyl ester (Fame) to produce the B24 fuel, according to the refiner. Cosmo Oil will then receive the B24 fuel to supply to their ship users, marking the refiner’s first foray into the marine biofuels space.

NX Shoji has been trialling supplying B24 in the Tokyo bay area since 2024 and in the Osaka bay area earlier this year. The biodiesel supplied in Osaka was procured domestically, the firm said, but did not disclose the seller.

This project is implemented with the support of the Tokyo metropolitan government after being selected as a “Commercialisation Promotion Support Project for the Utilisation of Decarbonised Fuels” in collaboration with the metropolitan government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Environment Corporation to support biofuel initiatives.
