Japanese Maritime Cluster Advances High-Efficiency LNG Conversions

339

NYK Line, Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Sasebo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. are teaming up to upgrade the main propulsion systems of Moss-type LNG carriers driven by steam turbines.

Engine Conversion

NYK received Approval in Principle from Class NK in Oct. 2023, marking the first for LNG carrier main engine conversion. Collaboration aims to convert steam turbines to dual-fuel diesel engines, enhancing environmental efficiency and LNG transport stability.

LNG holds promise for a decarbonized society’s transition energy, projecting steady transportation demand. However, limited new orders and retiring steam turbine-driven LNG carriers raise concerns for carrier scarcity due to fuel economy disparities.

Enhancing LNG

The trio plans to swap steam turbine-driven LNG carriers’ main propulsion with dual-fuel X-DF engines. These engines aim to enhance fuel efficiency while utilizing the robust Moss-type LNG tanks for prolonged durability and efficient resource utilization onboard.

The three companies will support stable LNG transport by converting main engines and contribute to the efficient use of ship resources with the technical capabilities of Japan’s maritime cluster.
