Japan’s leading ocean shipping companies — MOL, NYK Line, and “K” LINE — along with the Japanese Shipowners’ Association (JSA), have kicked off discussions about donating a significant training vessel to the Japan Agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers (JMETS), reports MOL.

Tackling Maritime Training Challenges

A recent report from MLIT pointed out some major hurdles JMETS is facing: shaky finances, a decline in onboard training days, staff shortages, and ageing facilities. These issues have made it tough for JMETS to effectively train the next generation of seafarers.

Industry Support for JMETS Reform

In light of this, the shipping industry is set to look into the specifications for the vessel and start conversations with shipyards, to have it ready by 2030. This initiative aligns with JMETS’s reform plan and aims to foster the long-term growth of skilled Japanese seafarers.

A Shared Vision for Seafarer Development

This effort showcases a collective commitment to ensuring sustainable maritime training and securing the future workforce for Japan’s shipping industry.
