This week, the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) reported that the Japanese government has initiated discussions with key shipping industry leaders regarding the potential impact of new U.S. tariffs and trade policies.
Industry Concerns and Government Response
During a meeting, executives from major shipping companies, including NYK, MOL, and “K” Line, along with the Japanese Shipowners’ Association (JSA), expressed serious concerns to State Minister Yasushi Furukawa. The industry representatives highlighted the uncertain global economic outlook and warned that new U.S. policies, particularly proposed port entry fees under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, could significantly disrupt global supply chains and create a major barrier for Japanese shipping companies. The delegation urged the government to intervene and request that the U.S. reconsider or withdraw these measures.
In response, Minister Furukawa acknowledged the concerns and assured the shipping leaders that he would share their feedback with other government departments and explore potential responses.
