Japan’s Container Exports To The U.S. See 7.1% Growth In October

Japan’s container exports to the U.S. showed a notable recovery in October, with a 7.1% increase, totalling 58,333 TEUs compared to the same month last year. This marks Japan’s first year-on-year growth in two months, following a dip below 50,000 TEUs in September.

A closer look at the details reveals

  • Direct Shipments: Exports from Japan to the U.S. surged b9.7%, reaching 43,375 TEUs.
  • Transshipped Containers: On the other hand, containers transshipped via third countries fell by 17.9%, amounting to 14,958 TEUs, which made up 25.6% of total exports.

The largest declines in transhipment volumes were observed in South Korea, China, and Taiwan:

  • South Korea: Transshipment dropped by 15.2% to 10,127 TEUs.
  • China: Containers transshipped through China decreased by 22.7%, totalling 1,961 TEUs.
  • Taiwan: The volume transshipped through Taiwan saw a significant decline of 29.5%, dropping to 1,415 TEUs.

Meanwhile, imports from the U.S. to Japan saw a strong increase of 20.2%, reaching 59,203 TEUs in September. The breakdown of these imports shows:

  • Direct Shipments: Increased by 11.5% to 44,587 TEUs.
  • Transshipped Containers: Grew by 57.5%, reaching 14,616 TEUs.

For transshipments

  • South Korea: Saw a significant drop of 56.5%, with just 2,200 TEUs.
  • China: Experienced a dramatic rise of 449.7%, reaching 1,946 TEUs.
  • Panama and Cartagena: Panama handled 1,922 TEUs, while Cartagena’s transhipment volume surged significantly from 19 TEUs to 1,635 TEUs.

Regarding direct shipments from the U.S. to Japan

  • Tokyo: Saw the largest increase, rising by 111.1% to 32,459 TEUs.
  • Yokohama: Increased by 94.1%, totaling 21,905 TEUs.
  • Kobe: Experienced a 14.1% decline to 7,186 TEUs.
  • Nagoya: Fell by 69.35% to 1,585 TEUs.
  • Osaka: Decreased by 25%, with 784 TEUs.

Overall, Japan’s container export and import data show significant shifts, with direct shipments growing while transhipment volumes saw mixed results across regions.
