Japan Marine United (JMU) has delivered its latest energy-efficient bulk carrier, Frontier Wish, to Southern Route Maritime on May 13, 2025. The vessel was constructed at the Ariake Shipyard in Kumamoto Prefecture and is part of JMU’s N-181,000 dwt Type Bulk Carrier series. This delivery marks another step forward in sustainable maritime transport, just weeks after the handover of its sister ship, Frontier Hope.
A Major Addition to Global Bulk Shipping
Frontier Wish sails under the Panama flag and is built to handle some of the world’s largest bulk cargo operations. With an overall length of 292 meters, breadth of 45 meters, depth of 24.55 meters, and a draft of 18.23 meters, it represents the largest class of vessels that the Port of Dunkirk in France can accommodate. Dunkirk remains one of the few ports in Northern Europe equipped to handle fully loaded bulkers of this scale.
Meeting Stringent Environmental and Efficiency Standards
The vessel is designed to meet Phase III of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standards. It incorporates a range of proprietary energy-saving technologies developed by JMU, including:
-
Super Stream Duct: Reduces energy use by approximately 3%.
-
SURF-BULB: Improves propulsion and lowers energy use by 3–7%.
-
LEADGE-Bow: Enhances seakeeping and vessel performance in real sea conditions.
-
ALV-Fin: Boosts propulsion force and cuts fuel consumption.
These innovations reflect growing demand for eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vessel designs.
Safety and Compliance Features
Beyond propulsion and fuel efficiency, Frontier Wish is equipped with a ballast water treatment system to prevent marine ecosystem contamination and maintains a certified Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM). The vessel is also compliant with NOx Tier III regulations, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions and aligning with global maritime environmental standards.
Part of a Strong Fleet Expansion by JMU
Frontier Wish is the ninth vessel in its series and follows closely behind the delivery of three other JMU-built ships in March 2025. These include:
-
Maersk el Bosque, a 12,800 TEU container ship for A.P. Møller – Maersk
-
Interasia Tribute, a 3,055 TEU vessel for Interasia Lines
-
Frontier Hope, a 93,691 GT bulk carrier
All vessels were delivered with cutting-edge energy efficiency systems, signaling JMU’s commitment to sustainable shipbuilding.
