JNPA Sees Double-Digit Growth in Cargo and Container Traffic, Marking a Strong Start

6

In July 2025, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA) in India experienced significant growth in cargo throughput and container traffic. The port’s performance highlights its continued strength as a major maritime hub, with one of its terminals, BMCT, achieving a new monthly record for container handling.

July 2025 Performance Highlights

Total cargo throughput at JNPA reached 8.51 million tonnes in July 2025, a substantial increase of 12.86% compared to July 2024. Container traffic also saw a healthy rise of 10.80%, reaching 668,336 TEUs. Among the port’s five container terminals, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) was a standout performer, handling 231,104 TEUs. This marked a 36.80% month-on-month increase and represented the highest monthly container throughput ever recorded by the terminal. The performance of other terminals varied, with NSICT and APMT showing positive growth, while NSIGT, NSFT, and NSDT experienced a decline in volume. Rail operations also contributed to the port’s strong results, with a significant increase in container rakes and TEUs moved by rail.

Year-to-Date Performance

The positive trend from July is consistent with the port’s year-to-date performance. For the period from April to July 2025, JNPA handled a total of 32.71 million tonnes of cargo, an increase of 10.73% year-on-year. Container traffic for this period grew by 14.28% year-on-year, reaching 2.618 million TEUs. The port also saw a significant rise in rail traffic, with 2,410 container rakes moving 390,597 TEUs, compared to 2,064 rakes and 327,999 TEUs in the same period of the previous year. This strong growth underscores JNPA’s pivotal role in India’s maritime trade and its effective management of its terminals and logistics infrastructure.
