Businesses in the shipping and fisheries sectors are invited to express their interest in joining the Marine Plastic Litter Global Industry Alliance (GIA). This initiative aims to unite maritime and fisheries industry leaders to develop innovative solutions to prevent and reduce ocean plastics, leveraging the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) experience in managing similar alliances.

Alliance Objectives

The Marine Plastic Litter GIA focuses on addressing marine plastic litter from the shipping and fisheries sectors. It will include diverse stakeholders such as shipowners, ports, fisheries, recycling companies, and technology providers. Members will collaborate through roundtable dialogues, develop industry guidelines, and raise awareness of green solutions, with outputs shared with IMO bodies for further action.

Membership Criteria

Eligible members are industry companies, including SMEs, cooperatives, and state-owned enterprises operating commercially. Interested companies must demonstrate a commitment to addressing sea-based marine plastic litter, willingness to engage actively, and the ability to provide significant financial and technical contributions, including a minimum of 25 days per year of in-kind technical expertise.
