The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) conducted a tabletop exercise with Indonesia and Malaysia to improve regional cooperation and oil spill response capabilities. The exercise involved over 20 participants from the three countries and oil spill response experts, reports The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

Refining Coordination

During its chairmanship of the Revolving Fund Committee (RFC) from April 2022 to March 2027, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) led efforts to enhance regional cooperation among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in responding to oil spills within the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS).

The RFC, established under a 1981 memorandum of understanding between the three littoral states and the Malacca Strait Council (MSC), provides a funding mechanism to support oil spill response efforts in the region.

The exercise focused on refining coordination procedures, ensuring swift communication between the littoral states during an oil spill incident. It also aimed to improve the rapid deployment of oil spill response assets by each state and foster collaboration between government agencies and oil spill response companies to optimize resource utilization.
