  • Jotun and BW LPG signed a new agreement to apply Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) on 38 vessels from 2025 to 2028.
  • The decision builds on the successful application of HPS on 17 vessels, with proven results in fuel efficiency and emission reduction.
  • The partnership reflects a shared commitment to operational performance and long-term sustainability goals.
  • Real-time performance monitoring and minimal hull cleaning needs have reinforced BW LPG’s confidence in Jotun’s coating solutions.

Jotun has signed a commercial agreement with BW LPG to enhance hull performance across 38 vessels between 2025 and 2028. The deal, finalized on June 3, 2025, during Nor-Shipping in Norway, will see the use of Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) to support long-term operational efficiency.

Hull Optimization Supports BW LPG’s Decarbonization Path

The agreement builds on the successful use of Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) on 17 existing BW LPG vessels, which have already shown measurable improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.

Ricardo Ackermann, Head of Procurement at BW LPG, explained that the selection followed a detailed evaluation process involving multiple paint suppliers. Key factors included environmental performance, delivery timelines, fuel savings linked to hull coatings, industry references, and cost. Jotun’s proposed solutions and logistics, alongside BW LPG’s own positive experience with Jotun’s dry dock coatings—particularly the SeaQuantum X200—played a crucial role in the final decision.

As part of its broader decarbonization strategy, BW LPG is aligning its fleet with the IMO’s greenhouse gas reduction goals. The company has already retrofitted 15 vessels with dual-fuel propulsion systems and is actively assessing future technologies, including ammonia-fueled propulsion. Alongside fuel innovation, BW LPG views hull optimization as a direct and effective approach to improve efficiency and support regulatory compliance.

Building a Long-Standing Partnership

The agreement marks a new chapter in a relationship that spans decades, dating back to the days of Bergesen D.Y. ASA. Jessica Doyle, Global Sales Director, Shipping at Jotun, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting that the deal builds on a proven history of performance and reflects Jotun’s commitment to clean shipping.

Knut-Helge Knutsen, Vice President and Head of Technical at BW LPG, emphasized the value of the long-term partnership. He noted that Jotun’s products consistently deliver on quality, meeting both operational and sustainability goals. According to Knutsen, maintaining a clean hull is essential for managing fuel consumption, and Jotun’s coatings have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing fouling over the five-year interval between dry dockings. BW LPG looks forward to continuing this trusted collaboration.

Proven Results in Hull Efficiency and Emission Reduction

Since 2020, Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions have been applied to 17 BW LPG vessels, delivering consistent results in hull efficiency. Notably, the first vessel in the program, BW Aries, recorded virtually no speed loss—just +0.04%—over a 56-month dry docking interval, significantly outperforming the guaranteed 1.5% threshold. This performance has been validated through ISO 19030-2 monitoring by Jotun analysts, underwater inspections, and internal reviews by BW LPG.

Kevin Knott, Senior Manager of Fleet Performance at BW LPG, reflected on the five-year experience with Jotun’s HPS. He noted improvements in fuel and emissions efficiency, with scheduled six-month underwater inspections and propeller polishing often eliminating the need for hull cleaning.

Knott further explained that BW LPG employs a multi-faceted strategy to enhance efficiency. This includes voyage weather routing, speed optimization, and Jotun coatings, together contributing to fuel and emissions savings in the range of 3 to 5%.
