Shipping firm Wallenius Wilhelmsen has decided to optimize hull performance of 42 of its vessels with Jotun’s anti-fouling coating system, reports VPO Global.
Hull Performance Solutions
On August 8, Norway-based provider of marine coatings Jotun said it has signed an agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen to provide its Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) system across the shipowner’s RoRo fleet.
According to Jotun, HPS combines SeaQuantum X200 antifouling with technical and digital solutions to accurately measure hull performance. The antifouling works are increasing vessel efficiency, cutting fuel costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
Compliance with global regulations
By using HPS across its fleet, Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to optimize its environmental performance and deliver enhanced stakeholder value.
“Working together we will be able to optimize hull performance and help Wallenius Wilhelmsen fully comply with global regulations and targets, while meeting its own stringent environmental objectives,” Gunhild Tveitan, Jotun’s Business Development Manager Scandinavia, commented.
Downside of fouling
Fouling is a key contributor to the spread of invasive species across marine ecosystems and a major cause of hull inefficiency, leading to increased fuel consumption and emissions.
Studies have suggested that the fuel consumption of the world fleet could be reduced by up to 20% if all vessels were kept fouling free.
